Nurses with a caring touch

Emma Russell, children’s nurse

We see a lot of familiar faces in our Children’s Hospital so we get to know the children and their families really well. We all become a bit of a team really; all working together to help our younger patients to get stronger and healthier. One such patient was Archie. He’s a long term patient of ours. We knew he was going to be in with us over another of his birthdays and we wanted to give him a present that would help to make his hospital bed feel a little more homely.

The nursing team came up with the idea of making a personalised quilt with handprints and personal messages from the nursing team and Archie’s friends on the ward. It was lovely to see his little face light up when we gave it to him. It meant a lot to everyone involved.

One of the things I love about working here is that everyone is prepared to do something a little bit extra special to care for our patients or to help our colleagues out. That attitude and energy creates a really lovely working environment.
