Nurse open evening

Heartbeat Education Centre; F level; North Wing; Southampton General Hospital
20 February 2018

Our opportunities. Your ambition.

Together we’re more.

Together we can learn more, achieve more, be more.  The opportunities are here.  It's time to reach for your ambitions.

Here at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust we're working hard to make sure our patients and their families have the most positive experience possible with us as part of our patient experience strategy and 20:20 vision.  In our recent friends and family questionnaire, 77% of our staff said that they are extremely likely to recommend us a place to work!

We are looking for nurses to join us in division B across our acute medicine, emergency medicine, respiratory high dependency, medicine for older people, specialist medicine and ophthalmology wards – you’ll help us shape the future in a leading teaching hospital as well as your own learning and career development.

We recognise the significant contribution your skills and expertise makes to patient care.  In light of this, we are offering a one-off payment of £4,000 pro rata on appointment (external applicants only with active NMC PIN) to those joining our service, as well as excellent relocation packages.

In exchange, you will be committed to remaining with your allocated ward area for 18 months, working in partnership with like-minded healthcare professionals in developing others whilst actively contributing to patient safety, experience and outcomes (terms and conditions apply).

You will need to have a strong focus on providing compassionate patient care and be able to demonstrate the ability to deliver on the chief nursing officer 6Cs framework.

We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic individuals, who are also keen team players.  You should enjoy the challenge of working in a busy environment.  With our services expanding, the staff nurse role will complement our existing teams.

If you have the relevant experience and qualifications for the role we are keen to work with you.  If you are looking to return to hospital nursing following time out of an acute care setting, we would also welcome the opportunity to talk to you and can support you with our comprehensive education programme.

You will be offered opportunities to develop both clinically and professionally within a supportive environment.  In return we can offer you opportunities to enhance your skills and be part of a forward-thinking and supportive multi-professional team.

We’ve worked hard as a trust to improve the efficiency of our services and as a result, we are currently in financial surplus.  We are one of England’s largest acute teaching trusts and have recently been rated ‘good’ by the CQC.  In the latest national NHS staff survey we ranked:

  • fifth in the country for staff engagement.
  • top ten for staff feeling happy with the standard of care provided.
  • top 20% for staff would recommend the trust as a place to work.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and only an hour on the train from central London.  The New Forest national park and the beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep.

The city offers living costs 20% lower than those in London, 13 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted and 13 nearby green spaces to enjoy

Should you wish to be interviewed on the evening, please submit an online application form by Thursday 15th February.  Applicants must have an active NMC pin to be interviewed.

On the day:

  • The event will run between 5.30pm – 8pm.
  • More information will be provided about the fantastic opportunities available and what it’s like to work for UHS.
  • You will have the chance to meet the teams and ask any questions you may have.
  • A tour of your chosen area/ward.
  • As well as all of this, you may also have the opportunity to be interviewed and offered a job on the day!

The £4,000 payment is subject to meeting certain criteria and may not apply in some circumstances.  Recruitment and retention premia payments are not applicable to individuals who are moving from within the Solent strategic alliance partners – i.e. Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust and Isle of Wight NHS Trust.  For future details regarding the incentive or to check your eligibility please contact our HR Team on 023 8120 6525.
