A career in healthcare sciences

There are over 600 healthcare scientists working at UHS in everything from audiology, medical physics and clinical engineering to microbiology and neuro and cardiac physiology. Some are lab based while others work directly with patients.

As part of our team, you’ll have access to one the UK’s leading clinical research facilities. In fact many of our consultant healthcare scientists lead on research - particularly in medical physics, clinical biochemistry and clinical immunology.

We’re an established and approved training hub for our Scientist Training Programmes, and accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science. We have a dedicated education lead and an established education forum, and offer support for trainees and trainers.

WHAT IS HEALTHCARE SCIENCE?

Within healthcare sciences, there are four main areas work is grouped into, based on the type of science involved. Click on the links to find out more:

Life sciences
Playing a crucial role in improving the understanding of illnesses and their diagnoses, as well as developing new treatments for medical problems, life sciences roles are often lab based.

Physical sciences and clinical engineering
Developing new techniques and technology to measure what is happening in the body and to diagnose and treat disease, as well as calibrating, maintaining and ensuring the safe usage of existing equipment.

Physiological sciences
Directly interacting with patients, you will use the latest techniques and equipment to identify abnormalities and restore body functions. You may also be providing long-term care for patients, helping to improve their quality of life.

Clinical bioinformatics
Using software tools to generate useful biological knowledge by analysing large data sets, you’ll be responsible for developing and improving methods for the acquisition, storage and analysis of biological data to support patient care.
