STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Medical Appraisal and Revalidation Co-ordinator

Having joined University Hospital Southampton’s (UHS) HR team 35 years ago, Brenda has supported the medical team and all our doctors throughout their time at UHS. Hear about why she was nominated as the HR Hero in her team, her time at UHS and why she thinks it’s a good place to work.

“Brenda has been in HR at Southampton for 35 years, for the last three, she has managed medical appraisals and revalidation. Brenda supports our doctors with everything to do with their annual appraisals, colleague and patient feedback and revalidation requirements. She provides great support to medical colleagues and has recently received some lovely feedback highlighting how appreciative everyone is of her help and knowledge, one comment described Brenda as ‘just the perfect person for the job”Elizabeth Brown, Medical Operations Manager

“When I first joined, Medical HR was a small team down in IT"

I started at UHS as a Band 3 and stayed in that post for quite a few years before a promotion in October 2018 where I moved up to a Band 4 role. I have always worked for the NHS. My first NHS job was at Lymington Hospital as a domestic bed maker while I was at college. When I chose to pursue an administrative career, the only choice for me was to carry on my career within the NHS.

“The doctors and everybody that works here are very passionate about what we do”

The people in this Trust are one of the reasons it’s a very good place to work. Everyone you meet is passionate about what they do which is a really nice environment to be in. My family have had care within the hospital and for me, I really wanted to give something back to my community.

“I love being able to say that I am part of a team that recruits the doctors that keep people safe”

Here at UHS, I can say that the work I am doing is purposeful and helps. You can say you are part of a big team that is passionate about what they do. Recruiting all the doctors and nurses, keeping them safe and making sure there are no illegal workers is extremely rewarding. We are recruiting future doctors and nurses that you would want to look after your family members and you would know they are safe in their hands.

“One of my highlights has to be seeing all the new doctors starting every year in August”

When new doctors start, it takes a lot of work as 200 doctors finish then the day after 200 more doctors start which means a lot of employment checks. But it’s really rewarding to help the doctors advance or start their careers here at UHS. Another highlight for me has to be looking back on how far the team has come. We are a much bigger team than when I started and we have brand new systems in place to help ease the processes for the team and doctors.

“I think the future of HR will look more computerised and hopefully we will have more technology in place to continually ease the recruitment process for us and candidates”
