Creating a Sense of Belonging

We know, when we get things right for our staff, it has a positive impact on patient care and that’s part of our Trust Values. It’s why Diversity, Equity and Impact are so important to us. We want to be inclusive in its truest sense, to celebrate diversity and recognise individuality. Our focus on equity recognises the variety of challenges our people face and makes sure our initiatives have a positive impact for everyone.

Our Inclusion and Belonging Strategy:

  • A workforce reflecting our communities at all roles at all levels.
  • Safe and healthy working environments, free from racism, aggression, hate and discrimination.
  • Recruitment processes that are free from bias and are inclusive.
  • Inclusive leadership and management.
  • Networks that thrive and support the creation of an inclusive and safe place to work.

“I want UHS to be a place where everyone has a voice. Where people feel included, respected, safe from harm, and no matter who you are, where you are from, your role, or who you identify as, your religion or sexual orientation. I am committed to building a culture at UHS where you can yourself and be your very best.” David French CEO UHS

We’re part of the wider Hampshire and Isle of Wight ED&I network and when you join us, you can also join a wide range of diverse communities and networks here:

Women's network

A space to talk about all things women related. With over 70% of our workforce identifying as female, the challenges we face affect so many of us, from maternity leave, to menopause, from career progression to self care, we talk aboutit all.

One Voice

"Unity is our strength and diversity is our power" Our network is a space to share and celebrate our global communities here at UHS, and raise awareness of the variety of cultures in our workforce.

Proud Alliance

Proud Alliance is a group of friendly LGBTQIA+ staff and allies. We are here to make friends, to support each other through any concerns at work, to celebrate our community and shared history, and to represent the trust at Pride and other events.

Long Term Illness and Disability

The LID network is a safe space for staff at UHS with a long-term illness and or disability or those that support our individuality. We want to raise awareness, care for our staff and make UHS a place where we can all belong.

Forces Community

A space in UHS for Armed Forces Veterans, Reservists and Armed Forces Spouses. Together, we want to create an active community of like-minded individuals to provide mutual support and raise awareness of the help available for our veteran patients and community.

Early Careers

Our apprenticeships and graduate programmes offer a wide mix of learning in the workplace, on-the-job training, and opportunities to practise new skills in a real work environment. We offer over 40+ different apprenticeship courses ranging from Level 2 through to Level 7 post graduate qualifications. Our apprenticeships include clinical roles and non-clinical roles, with our graduate programmes focussing on the operational management of hospital environments.

We’re supporting the NHS to become the world’s first health service to reach carbon net zero with our Green Plan. It’s our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment and the steps we’ll collectively take to get there.

As the largest employer in Southampton and with an energy consumption equivalent to all the households in Winchester combined, we recognise our impact on the environment and population we serve. Environmental change is also a factor in some of the conditions that we treat our patients for, so by proactively lessening our impact and being a leading influence in our community, we can go some way to preventing people becoming ill in the first place.
