STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Shamaila Phlebotomist

We caught up with Shamaila to hear all about her career journey as a Phlebotomist at UHS so far.

Hi Shamaila, can you tell us a bit about your background?

“I am originally from Birmingham and worked as a phlebotomist and a laboratory medical laboratory assistant. Then I moved down here and started at UHS in phlebotomy in 2004 and have been here ever since. I started as a Band 3 and now am the Phlebotomy Co-Ordinator so I oversee day-to-day activities within the department”

Why have you stayed at UHS?

“I have stayed here because I have really enjoyed my time here. I have had brilliant support from my managers and the team around me. It's very rewarding and you get that satisfaction when you can help patients and they are happy with the care you provided. I have felt looked after during my time here, there is loads of support available to you and they care about your work-life balance”

What opportunities have you had during your time here?

“I have moved up the bands here at UHS and I have always been encouraged every step of the way by my managers and team. They have encouraged me to do courses that develop myself and my career. I am where I am today because of them pushing me to do those courses so I can progress my career”

What’s it like being part of the Phlebotomist team?

“It's brilliant. We have a really good team of people who support and respect each other. Everyone is always there to help, you never feel like you’re on your own and that’s what I love about the team. They always have that respect for you and even if we are short staff will still take the time to help you. Our is team is all about teamwork and support”
