Each career journey is unique, marked by moments of growth, resilience, and achievement. Today, we’re delighted to share the story of Vicki, whose career path illustrates how passion, hard work, and the right environment can make a profound difference.
Vicki’s journey began with an unexpected start in health and social care but soon found her calling in administration and business support. From starting at UHS as a PA to our Chief People Officer, Vicki has now progressed to a pivotal role as Business Administration Manager in our Estates, Facilities, and Capital Development department. She has grown significantly within the UHS community, and her story is sure to inspire those considering a career here.
I was never quite sure what I wanted to do so I ended up falling into frontline health and social care as that was what my mum did! While there I naturally gravitated towards the admin side of things; my bosses noticed I had an affinity for it so gave me tasks like rostering, filing, and document auditing … and the rest is history!
It has to be my boss at my first admin job. I joined as an absolute entry-level Admin Assistant as I had almost no experience or qualifications, but he saw something in me and after only 10 months I was promoted twice over to be a Partner’s Secretary. I stayed supporting him for nearly 4 years and we developed a brilliant working relationship, and the faith he showed in me made such a lasting impact—I’ll always be grateful to him!
Aside from the above answer, my first big milestone was joining UHS as PA to the Chief People Officer and his senior management team. I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the organisation or kinder people to support me. The role gave me a great overview of what we do here, who almost everyone was and really highlighted the opportunities available – they sold it to me so completely! And Now cannot imagine working anywhere else! They also gave me the confidence to go for the job I now have in EFCD (Estates, Facilities, and Capital Development), something I probably wouldn’t have done otherwise as it was quite a jump in responsibility!
Honestly, my lack of formal qualifications. In the past I have had to rely on my experience (which to start with was minimal!) and the hiring manager’s good faith in me based on my interview. I have now started a Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship which will hopefully make future progression easier.
Getting involved and using initiative – there aren’t many things I won’t try! I think hands-on experience is invaluable. While of course, it’s always good to ask for help when needed, teaching yourself helps retain information so much better.
The Foundation and Intermediate Management Skills courses offered at UHS. They were fantastic starting points and I would be lost on my degree if I hadn’t done them first! And of course … the degree I am doing now!
Umm, this is difficult … probably the people. My line manager is fantastic – she supports me in everything, appreciates what I do and genuinely cares about me. I am also fortunate to have a wonderfully competent and kind team and wider department.
Fortunately Admin and Business are extremely flexible roles, and I’m lucky to have a supportive management team that allows me to pick up projects and connect with people who can help with future opportunities.
Once my degree is complete I intend to move into Business or Transformation management (at UHS of course).
Definitely Transformation and Project Management. Fortunately, my degree includes a module on this, which is incredibly helpful.
For those just starting – get involved and get to know people. Your network is invaluable and the more people that know about you and the fantastic work you do, the better!
Use your network! And get a coach or mentor. This could be your line manager, or it could be someone more senior in your field that has a similar background – speak with them to identify your challenges, be honest, ask their advice and action it.
If I could go way back I might have started with an apprenticeship or university. It would have made it easier when applying for jobs early on but otherwise, no! Every experience - good, back and ugly - has shaped me into what I am and what I do no and I wouldn’t change that.
