Introduction

In an illuminating interview, Abbie Burton, Deputy Operational Manager at UHS who has recently started a 12-month secondment as a Theatre Operations Manager in Division A, generously shares insights into her remarkable career journey. Her narrative touches upon challenges faced, leadership growth, and the influential role of a supportive environment. Let's embark on a journey through the various stages of Abbie's career, exploring how she navigated transitions, sought opportunities, and embraced continuous learning.

Shaping a Leadership Journey: Challenges and Triumphs

Abbie's career trajectory began with a pivotal decision during her college years. Expressing her initial inclination towards creative writing, she notes, "I got my A levels at college...wanted to do creative writing, but when I went to open days, I decided that wasn't for me." Her mother's association with the NHS influenced her choice to explore the healthcare sector. Recognising the NHS as a reputable organisation, Abbie embarked on a path that would shape her future—a journey initiated by an admin business and administration apprenticeship.

The impact of family influence remains evident as Abbie acknowledges, "Having my mum working for a trust at the time was what influenced me to come to NHS." This connection provided insights into the healthcare industry, ensuring that her career choice was both familial and informed.

Abbie's journey unfolded as she discovered her natural aptitude for administration. Her proficiency in organisation, computers, and English became the foundation for her administrative role. Reflecting on this realisation, she states, "I had skills already that made me good at the admin side of things...I found something that I was quite good at. So I just sort of stuck with it." Abbie's journey exemplifies the significance of recognising inherent strengths and leveraging them for career success.

As she progressed in her career, Abbie's self-awareness led her to seek roles that aligned with her aspirations. "I knew I was capable of more...so I applied for a band 4...I wanted to do something that felt closer to patients," she shares. This strategic move reflected her determination to bridge the gap between her skills and a role that offered closer engagement with patients.

Nurturing Growth: UHS as a Catalyst

Abbie highlights UHS's significance by recounting her early experiences: "When I joined UHS, there was a manager who approached me and discussed what they believed I was capable of." This early interaction exemplifies the proactive support and personalised attention that UHS provides to its employees. The manager's belief in Abbie's potential set the tone for her journey, emphasising the role of mentorship and guidance in fostering individual growth within the organisation.

Transitioning into leadership roles presented its set of challenges. Abbie candidly acknowledges, "Building confidence as a manager and leader took time, and it was particularly challenging as a younger member of the staff leading individuals with more experience." Her leadership journey reflects the universal struggle of self-doubt and the resilience required to navigate the complexities of managing teams. This acknowledgement humanizes the leadership experience, making it relatable to others on similar paths.

Abbie's leadership approach is marked by openness and a commitment to ongoing learning. She stresses, "Encouraging ongoing learning is crucial, and I provide tips on training and development opportunities." Abbie's emphasis on continuous learning underscores the importance of adaptability in leadership. Her commitment to creating an environment where team members feel comfortable discussing their aspirations aligns with UHS's ethos of fostering a culture of collaboration and growth.

In essence, UHS emerges as more than an employer for Abbie—it becomes a cornerstone in her professional development. The organisation's proactive approach to mentorship, acknowledgement of challenges in leadership roles, and commitment to ongoing learning contribute to a holistic and supportive work environment.

Educational Empowerment: Level 5 Apprenticeship

Abbie Burton's journey of educational empowerment through a Level 5 apprenticeship at UHS demonstrates the transformative impact of continuous learning on professional growth.

Abbie reflects on the profound influence of her Level 5 apprenticeship, emphasising its role in reinforcing her existing skills. She states, "The course has served to consolidate and reaffirm my existing skills. It's reassuring to see that my approach aligns with the principles and concepts covered in the apprenticeship." This acknowledgement underlines the value of educational initiatives in providing a structured framework to validate and strengthen practical skills, fostering a deeper understanding of the role.

The teaching hospital environment at UHS emerges as a catalyst for Abbie's growth. She points out, "UHS being a teaching hospital has played a crucial role in my growth. The availability of resources on the VLE and the support to pursue various courses have been instrumental." The emphasis on education within the hospital setting creates a conducive atmosphere for continuous learning. The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) serves as a valuable resource, offering opportunities for skill development and expanding knowledge. Abbie's experience underscores the significance of a teaching hospital's commitment to education in shaping the capabilities of its staff.

Abbie's educational journey symbolises the harmonious relationship between practical experience and theoretical knowledge. The alignment of her approach with the course content illustrates the synergy between hands-on skills gained in the workplace and the structured learning provided by educational programs. The teaching hospital's role in providing resources and support further enhances the educational experience, contributing significantly to Abbie's professional development.

Since the interview, Abbie has achieved a significant milestone. She has successfully completed her apprenticeship with distinction. (We extend our warmest congratulations on this remarkable achievement.)
