We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and forward-thinking Band 8a Service Manager to lead the operational delivery and continuous improvement of high-quality, patient-centred services.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key leadership role within our organisation, ensuring services are safe, effective, financially sustainable, and responsive to the needs of our patients, staff, and partners.

As Service Manager, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across your designated services, working closely with clinical, nursing,  administrative and corporate colleagues to deliver excellent performance against quality, operational, and financial objectives.

You will be responsible for driving service transformation, improving patient experience, and ensuring the efficient use of resources while maintaining compliance with national standards and organisational priorities.

The role has a significant impact on the delivery of organisational objectives by supporting high-quality patient care, improving access and performance, enhancing productivity, and leading continuous service improvement. You will use data and evidence to inform decision-making, manage change effectively, and foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability.

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS, we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognising that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Proven operational leadership with significant experience managing complex healthcare services, delivering high-quality patient care, achieving performance targets, and leading teams through change within a large, multidisciplinary environment.

Strong strategic and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret performance, quality, workforce, and financial data to inform decision-making, drive continuous improvement, and deliver sustainable service developments.

Excellent leadership and relationship-building abilities, demonstrating the capacity to influence, engage, and collaborate effectively with clinicians, senior leaders, staff, and external partners to achieve shared objectives.

A commitment to UHS values and patient-centred care, with a track record of fostering a positive, inclusive culture that prioritises quality, safety, staff wellbeing, equality, and continuous improvement.

Reporting to the Care Group Manager, you will work as part of the senior operational management team, partnering with Clinical Leads, Matrons, Lead Nurses, Consultants, Allied Health Professionals, and corporate support teams. You will also provide leadership and support to operational and administrative teams, ensuring strong multidisciplinary working and effective engagement with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients and the organisation.
