Job Title: Consultant Urological Surgeon - Benign/LUTS and Core Urology
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Type: Permanent

UHS has an exciting opportunity to join our team of 14 consultants.  The successful candidate will spearhead our benign/LUTS team; leading the LUTS pathway for BPH, developing nurse-led diagnostic & follow up pathways & supporting the launch of a new benign hub at the Royal South Hants Hospital.  The successful candidate will progress benign pathways & deliver a networked approach to the management of core & benign urology. The expansion of complex BPH surgery delivered at UHS will be encouraged, serving the needs of our local population. Contribution to the diagnostic pathway is expected. Collaborative working with a range of healthcare professionals will be necessary.

UHS is a large teaching hospital & major trauma centre with a tertiary catchment across the south coast.  We provide tertiary cancer services for prostate, kidney, adrenal, bladder, penis & testis with open, laparoscopic & robotic surgery (Da Vinci X & Xi).  We have a breadth of benign service ranging from andrology, stones, BPH & general urology, networking with Salisbury for female, neuro & video-urodynamic expertise.

Outpatient clinics, diagnostics including urodynamics & cystoscopy, as well as LA procedures run from our dedicated urology centre. We work collaboratively with our allied surgery specialties, of note we have a paediatric surgery team as well as a 24/7 Interventional radiology service.  On call will initially be 1:14 with 24/7 middle grade cover, future consultant expansion is anticipated.

Please see the Consultant Brochure which provides further information.

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

The successful candidate will lead and develop the LUTS/BPH pathway to support delivery for this patient cohort. They will deliver cross site operative work as capacity allows to ensure maximal delivery of benign patients. To support this the successful candidate will play a key role in the outpatient provision and supervision of multidisciplinary clinics and diagnostics.

For an overview of the position, please refer to the attached Job Description and Person Specification document. This includes a detailed breakdown of the key responsibilities, role expectations, and the qualifications we are looking for. It outlines the essential criteria for the role and is designed to support you in preparing your application by helping you evaluate how your skills, experience, and professional background align with the requirements of the role.
