Charting New Horizons: Dr. Pradesh Kumar's UHS Fellowship

Blog by Dr.Pradesh Kumar Senthamil Selvan

What made you choose UHS as the place to do your foundation fellowship training?

As I arrived in Southampton, leaving behind the familiarity of my homeland India, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. Starting a new chapter of my life at University Hospitals Southampton (UHS) seemed like an adventure filled with endless possibilities and challenges. Little did I know that this journey would shape me in ways I could never have imagined.

Back in India, I had heard tales of the university's exceptional medical education and research, and I yearned to be a part of this academic excellence. The thought of learning from seasoned faculty members and conducting cutting-edge research fascinated me, and it was a dream come true to be a part of this prestigious institution.

The first few days were a whirlwind of emotions as I adjusted to the new environment, the people, and the way of life in Southampton. The weather, though a stark contrast from the scorching heat of India, had its own charm with the mild breeze and occasional drizzles. The city's serene landscape, dotted with historic architecture and lush green parks, felt like a welcome change from the bustling chaos of my hometown.

What has the training and support been like so far?

Stepping into the vast premises of UHS for the first time was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. The hospital's state-of-the-art facilities and modern infrastructure left me in awe, and I knew I was in a place where innovation thrived. The bustling corridors echoed with a mix of accents and languages, signifying the multicultural fabric of the institution. It was heartening to see fellow Indian students and professionals, making me feel a bit more at home.

The first few weeks at UHS were filled with orientation programs, introductions to faculty, and getting accustomed to the hospital's workflow. I couldn't have asked for a more supportive environment. The faculty and senior colleagues were warm and welcoming, always willing to lend a helping hand. The diversity among students from different corners of the globe was heartwarming, and we quickly formed a close-knit community, supporting each other through the challenges of living in a new country.

What stood out the most during my time at UHS was the emphasis on patient care and compassion. The hospital's patient-centered approach touched my heart. I saw doctors and nurses go above and beyond to ensure that each patient received not just medical attention but also emotional support and empathy. Witnessing such dedication reaffirmed my belief in the noble profession I had chosen.

As an Indian in Southampton, I couldn't help but miss the vibrant festivals, bustling markets, and the aroma of Indian spices. However, the city's diverse culinary scene pleasantly surprised me, offering a range of international cuisines that appeased my taste buds. Exploring the city in my free time, I discovered its historical significance and cultural richness, which helped me develop a deeper appreciation for my new home.

Although I sometimes faced language barriers and cultural differences, the experience of living in Southampton broadened my horizons and enriched my understanding of the world. The friends I made at UHS became my second family, celebrating festivals together and sharing stories of our respective countries, making me feel more at home.

Do you feel UHS is a place where you can achieve your career goals?

Based on my candid and heartfelt experiences, I can confidently affirm that this place is a true gem when it comes to achieving one's career goals. The exceptional camaraderie among the consultants, registrars, and supporting staff, coupled with the invaluable support from the HR team, creates an environment where everyone is genuinely invested in our growth and success. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be part of such a supportive community.

Looking ahead, my aspiration is to advance into IMT soon, and with the abundance of opportunities and resources available here, I have every confidence that my dreams will become a reality. This is an environment that nurtures talent and dedication, and I am committed to making the most of it to reach new heights in my career journey.

What are your plans after the training?

Upon completing the foundation fellowship, my ultimate aspiration is to secure a place in the Internal Medicine Training (IMT) program. This step will mark the beginning of the next phase of my medical career, allowing me to delve deeper into the world of internal medicine. The IMT training is renowned for its comprehensive curriculum, providing me with the opportunity to gain expertise in a wide range of medical subspecialties, from cardiology and endocrinology to gastroenterology and nephrology. This versatility excites me as I look forward to honing my skills and knowledge, becoming a well-rounded and adept medical practitioner.

Beyond the professional aspirations, there is a deeply personal motivation driving me forward - the desire to live a happy and fulfilling life with my family. My loved ones have been my pillars of support throughout this journey, providing unwavering encouragement and understanding during times of stress and uncertainty. As I envision the future, I see a life where I can strike a harmonious balance between my medical career and my family life, nurturing both with equal devotion.

In conclusion, as I move forward from the foundation fellowship programme and embark on the path of IMT training, my vision for the future is centered around both professional excellence and personal fulfillment. Through dedication, resilience, and the support of my family, I hope to achieve my goals and live a content and joyous life, contributing positively to society while cherishing the precious moments with my loved ones. This journey has taught me that with determination and a loving support system, I can overcome any obstacles that come my way, making my dreams a reality and finding true happiness along the way.
